It is a part of the city’s fortifications, which is named after St. Peter’s Chapel. The Chapel Bridge was constructed in the first half of the 14th century and is located nearby. Scenes of Swiss and local history, including the biographies of the city’s patron saints, St. Leodegar and St. Maurice were illustrated by the paintings that were added in the 17th Century.

One of the world’s most famous monuments is «The dying Lion of Lucerne».
It was carved out of natural rock in memory of the heroic deaths of the Swiss mercenaries at the Tuileries in 1792. The Lion of Lucerne was described by Mark Twain as the saddest and most moving piece of rock in the world.

The Old Town is bordered by historical buildings clad in frescos on the right bank of the River Reuss at a few picturesque squares.
In 1332 Lucerne has swored together with the cantons Uri, Schwyz and Unterwalden a federal oath, which is now the special attraction Weinmarkt. Equally attractive is the Kornmarkt square, which features the Town Hall, the beautifully painted Pfistern guildhall and the Hirschenplatz square, named after an old inn dating from the Middle Ages.

One of the finest concert halls in the world and with it’s 1800 seats. Also parts of these sensational constructions are the Lucerne Hall, the Convention Centre with the auditorium and the Museum of Art – the fourth largest in Switzerland.

Musegg Wall

Musegg Wall

In 1386, a part of the rampart walls was built; the wall is still entirely intact. Four towers are open to the public: Schirmer, Zyt, Wacht and Männli. In 1535, Hans Luter built the oldest city clock, which is in the Zyt tower. This clock is allowed to chime every hour one minute before all the other city clocks.
Bourbaki

Bourbaki

One of the last giant panoramic paintings of the 19th century is the 112 meter by 10 meter large painting, which has been preserved. It is a European cultural monument. Edouard Castres, the painter of the Panorama, experienced the war as a Red Cross volunteer. A museum (very close to the Glacier Garden) conveys knowledge about the war, the fate of the Bourbaki army and about the panoramic painting.
